Maintaining Your Lawnmower

from:

Lawnmowers are machines that are meant to last. Even the cheapest brands can last up to 10 years while more expensive ones can last twice as much. Yet lawnmowers can be short lived depending on how it is being used and at the same time being maintained.
Here are some tips to extend the life of your lawnmower and its usability to your household.

1. Keeping the blades sharp. Sharp blades in lawnmowers are a gardener’s delight. Not only do they cut the grass cleanly, they also keep the grass healthy because of the clean cut. Blades typically get dull after a month or two of regular use. Therefore, detaching it from the unit and sharpening it up would increase its performance. Make sure before removing any parts of the lawnmower, the switch has been turned off to ensure your safety.
2. Replace or clean your air filter. Motorized mowers are usually equipped with air filters. In time, they get clogged and so they should be replaced or cleaned depending on the material they are made of. In general, paper filters are meant to be thrown away while those made of foam should simply be cleaned.
While you should follow the manufacturer's instructions, most air filters need cleaning after every 25 hours of use and more frequently in dusty conditions. If your mower's air filter is a foam filter, remove it, wash it in a bucket filled with mild soapy water - liquid dishwashing detergent works best - and let it dry completely. Most require you to distribute a teaspoon or so of oil throughout the filter.
3. Keep the tires well-inflated. Well-inflated tires keep mowers running evenly, especially in the case of the ride-on variety. The tire pressure should therefore be checked every time before operating the mower.
4. Use the right kind of oil – oil is needed by motorized mowers to keep the engine lubricated. The right kind of motor oil should always be bought to avoid destroying the engine.
5. Clean the mower every after use. Maintaining the lawnmower is not a one time task. Your equipment should be cleaned properly after its use to unclog blades and other parts which may affect its performance if left unattended.
Scrape off caked-on grass clippings after each use of your walk-behind power mower. Use a piece of wood or an old wooden spoon or spatula so you don't damage the blades with metal to metal contact.

To clean beneath the deck of a power mower turn the mower off, and remove the spark-plug wire (and the key from the switch on electric-start models). Tilt the mower on its side 30 degrees and then prop it up on a cement block or a log. Avoid turning the mower all the way on its side as the oil or gas may leak. For electric mowers, unplug them before you start. Because the walk-behind models are often mulching or recycling mowers, which cut grass into finer bits, grass is more likely to stick to them, requiring more frequent cleaning than riding mowers.
Set your garden hose nozzle for a fine mist, rather than a direct jet. Never use a pressure sprayer to clean a lawn mower. Remove caked-on dirt and grass from the exterior using a soft cloth and mild soapy water in a bucket. When you're finished, washing a mower with water, let it run or drive it around for a few minutes to spin the water off of all belts and pulleys.
Don't do this if you have an electric mower. They are light enough to tip over and clean with wooden shim or plastic scraper as described.
Now that you have read this, make sure that you have your lawnmowers regularly maintain unless you want to do the mowing manually.
